Chapter Seventeen

Fear…

She’s on her way.

I glanced at the text from Death and nodded to myself shooting back a quick, ‘thanks’ while I waited on River Street outside our underground card game for the trolly bus thing the tours were held on with her on it to make its appearance up the block.

Requiem stood near me and asked, “Where do you think this fuck nugget ex-boyfriend of hers is?”

“Your guess is as good as mine, I’d just rather we cover all our bases. She’s a nice girl, my girl now, and I know she’s got to be freaking out inside.”

“You told her we were looking out for her?” he asked.

“Yeah, but seeing is believing,” I said.

“True, that. Happy to help – not like any of us are going out of our way here. Card game needs security and boys would be having a fucking beer at the club anyhow.”

“Yeah, we all will by the time this second tour is up,” I said.

“Think that’s hers?” he asked thrusting his lightly bearded chin in the direction one of the trolleys was coming from.

“Timing’s right,” I said.

“Enjoy your tour,” he said chuckling.

“How bad could it be?” I asked and he barked a laugh. “I dunno, man, they always looked kitschy and dumb from what I’ve seen.”

Yeah, that may be, I thought to myself, but my Annabel Lee is neither kitschy nor dumb.

I went up to the check-in counter and showed them my phone. I knew what time slot her tours were, and so I booked for her second one of the night on purpose knowing I had a better than good chance of getting her, but to seal the deal, I told the girl at the ticketing counter: “I’m actually a friend of Lainey’s and want to take her tour specifically to support her, is there any way to do that?”

She stopped and eyed me and finally said, “I’ll check with Lainey first,” and I nodded.

I’d been hoping to surprise her, but that was coming as she slid up to the booth next to me and looked up asking, “What are you doing here? I still have one more tour.”

“You know this guy?” the counter girl asked. “He bought a ticket and was asking to be put on your tour.”

“Wait, really?” she asked, looking up at me.

“Really,” I said smiling.

“That’s so awesome!” Lainey cried. “Absolutely, I’ll take you.” She was grinning from ear to ear like a kid who’d just been given the toy they’d been coveting all year long for Christmas.

“Okay, then,” the ticketing girl said, and she wrote down on a scrap bit of paper #47 – 1 Pass, and said, “Hand that to Lainey as you board your bus. It’ll be coach number forty-seven.”

“Thanks,” I said.

“Alright, let’s go,” Lainey said enthusiastically, linking her arm through mine. “This is so fantastic,” she gushed. “Welcome aboard!”

I got onto the trolley looking bus thing with her and nodded to the driver, a young mixed kid.

“Drake, this is Fear, the one I told you about. He’s decided to buy a ticket and ride with us.
